Barium is a silvery-white reactive element, belonging to group 2 of the periodic table. Soluble barium compounds are extremely poisonous. Barium was identified by Karl Scheele in 1774 and extracted by Humphry Davy in 1808. Barium has 40 isotopes. 7 of them are naturally occurring, 6 of which are stable.
Barite, or barium sulfate (BaSO4), when ground is used as a filler for rubber, plastics, and resins. It is insoluble in water and so is used in X-rays of the digestive system. Barium nitrate, Ba(NO3)2, burns brilliant green and is used in fireworks.
